Read About Cumberland's Historic Past
and Future Development

Cumberland by the Blackstone: 250 Years of Heritage celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Town of Cumberland, Rhode Island, a community along the Blackstone River that played a major role in America's Industrial Revolution.

The authors, Joyce A. Hindle Koutsogiane, Ed.D., and David W. Balfour, have woven a visual tapestry of local history that combines photographs from the collections of many families with an outstanding descriptive narrative.

The book celebrates Cumberland's historic past while charting a course for future development.

In 1997, when the Town of Cumberland, Rhode Island, celebrated its 250th anniversary, the first edition of Cumberland by the Blackstone: 250 Years of Heritage was published. Response to the book was beyond all expectations and the public demand to republish it was not surprising. In the nine years since the initial publication, many changes have taken place. It is the hope that this updated second edition will allow a new generation of Cumberland residents to face the future, reminded that the town's colorful past is a stepping stone to an even more vibrant future.
